"To enjoy a full night's sleep, the pillow is just as important as the mattress. We have gathered a few useful tips on what to consider in order to make the best choice."
The comfort of the pillow is influenced by the characteristics of the mattress on which it is used. For this reason, we recommend that when trying different pillow models in the store, you lie on a mattress with a firmness as close as possible to that of your own or, ideally, on a sample of the mattress you have at home. This way, you will get the best possible idea of how you will feel the pillow while sleeping at home.
Think about your preferred sleeping position...
Depending on how you prefer to sleep, you will need a pillow of different height and firmness.
If you sleep on your stomach, choose a pillow with a classic shape that does not distort the neck. The appropriate height is up to 12 cm. A soft core made of high-elastic foam or memory foam will allow the head to sink comfortably. If possible, avoid sleeping on your stomach frequently, as this position compresses the organs and distorts the neck and lower back, which can lead to pain.
If you sleep on your side, choose an anatomical pillow. The wavy shape allows the ear to rest against the pillow without leaving empty space and the head hanging. A classic pillow may also be comfortable for you. In this case, it is important to choose the right height that allows the neck to be straight and relaxed.
For sleeping on your back, the recommendation is for a medium-firm pillow, even if you prefer a higher one. It is important for the neck to relax but not sink excessively. The anatomical pillow from its higher side can also do the job, in case the wavy shape is comfortable for you.
Variety of materials and processing
"You will find many options for pillow filling on the market. What you choose depends on both your personal preferences and some factors such as allergies, for example."
Foam
Foam is a breathable, hypoallergenic, anti-dust mite, and eco-friendly material. Foam pillows offer a variety of comfort levels and can be used in any sleeping position.
High-elasticity foam is a material with high stretchability that is breathable and does not retain moisture.
Memory foam allows for a wide variety of products to meet individual needs. Memory foam can be softer or firmer, have a texture or grooves, and can be combined in different ways in a pillow. Pillows with cores made entirely of memory foam maintain the correct position of the head and neck during sleep. The material is hypoallergenic, dust mite resistant, does not retain dust, and maintains a high level of hygiene.
The gel foam is a breathable material that provides a constantly dry environment and a feeling of freshness and coolness. It is especially suitable for people who often feel hot while sleeping. In combination with memory foam, it contributes to a comfortable and pleasant sleep.
Fluff
Down is a traditional filling material for pillows. Goose down is naturally very soft and the head sinks into it, especially if the pillow is not high enough. It is a material that offers an exceptionally soft feeling during sleep. Since it is a material of natural origin, goose down predisposes to the development of bacteria and microorganisms, and pillows with this filling do not have a long usage period.
Down is also at a higher price. An alternative is silicone-treated down, which offers a similar feel but at a better price.
Textile
Although the pillow is covered with a pillowcase, the fabric sometimes comes into contact with the skin, so it is important how it is treated.
Ingredients like Aloe Vera make the fabric suitable even for the most sensitive skin, while cooling textiles can bring you a more peaceful sleep if you feel warm at night.
"If you struggle with allergies, be sure to look for pillows with removable covers that you can clean often, as well as textiles with anti-allergic treatment."
